MEETING MINUTES

Thanks for Helping the Friends

Make the Season Bright for Children in Need

With your help, the Antioch Library Friends brought literacy and good cheer to kids in the local area through three different programs this holiday Season. The Friends partnered with Waukegan Township, Allendale, and One Hope United in bringing smiles to children and teens.

Waukegan Township has a program where it distributes toothbrushes and  books to children in need at the holidays. They were happy to accept used books from the Friends’ collection in the Used Book Shop and our storage area.  We donated 160 chapter and picture books, in mint condition, for this program. The Friends could not have spread this holiday cheer without your donations of used books!

Working with One Hope United, the Friends purchased and wrapped books for 30 teens as holiday gifts and added 12 book series (such as the Hunger Games, Twilight, Percy Jackson, National Geographic Kids) to One Hope’s library.

One Hope United is a nonprofit organization that houses and educates children through their child development center, abuse prevention efforts, youth services and foster/adoption problems.

The staff at Allendale requested  series books for classrooms so their teens could share the books. Additionally, books were bought and distributed to 16 teens identified by their teachers.

Allendale is nonprofit facility dedicated to the treatment and education of troubled children and teens.

The programs at One Hope United and Allendale were funded by proceeds from the Used Book Shop. Once again, this would not have been possible without your book donations to the Antioch Library and your patronage of our shop. Thanks for helping  us make this happen and bringing literacy and a brighter season these children and teens.

Where Do You Donate Your Used Books?

Are You Sure It’s to a Worthy Cause?

There have been many articles in newspapers and in blogs around the country about big donation bins on shopping plaza and mall parking lots asking  you to “donate” or “recycle” your used books. What do you know about the companies that sponsor these bins?

Although these bins have words like “Books for Charity” or “Get Involved -Donate Your Books,” many of these bins are actually operated by for profit companies who sell their books on-line (through Amazon and other sites). These companies get around these deceptive practices by donating a very small portion of the books to charity or by donating only the books that have no online market value.

If you want to donate your books to charity- why not donate them to our library? You can be assured that your donations will benefit your library or go to local literacy programs. Most of the books are sold in the Library’s Used Book Shop or at the Annual Fall Book Sale. Some of these books end up in our monthly silent auction.   The Antioch Library Friends is a 501(3)c volunteer  organization.  Funds from these sales are used to purchased equipment or materials for the library or for programming.

Here’s a partial list of some of the resources and programming the book shop/book sale profits have funded:

  • Adult and Children Summer Reading Programs
  • Computer monitors and printers
  • Microfilm Reader
  • Renovations to the Eide Room
  • Book Collections
  • Book Club materials
  • Special performances, instructors and programs
  • Flat Screen/DVD player behind the Circulation Desk
  • Library Furniture

If you are planning on donating your used books please consider your library first! Your community will benefit. We currently are in need of children’s and teen’s picture and chapter books.
To make a book donation please take it to the Circulation Desk or tell the person at the Circulation Desk that you would like your books unloaded at the back of the library.

If you are still considering  donating your books to the shopping mall big bins make sure a charity will benefit significantly from your generosity.

Silent Auction

Take part in one of our Silent Auctions by bidding on items place in the glass display case just outside the Library Friends bookstore. Items change regularly so check often to see what is being offered. Proceeds from sales benefit the library.
